When do I use LCM in real life?

  • Do we have an event that will be repeating over and over?
  • Will we have to purchase or get multiple items in order to have enough?
  • Are we trying to figure out when something will happen again at the same time?

Hotdogs and Buns

Hotdogs come in packages of 10, while buns/rolls come in either 8 or 12. What's the smallest number of each you have to buy to have the same number of each?

Three planet alignment

Suppose there are three planets revolving around a star which take l, m and n units of time respectively to complete their orbits. Assume that l, m and n are integers. Assuming the planets started moving around the star after an initial linear alignment, all the planets attain a linear alignment again after units of time. At this time, the first, second and third planet will have completed orbits respectively around the star.
