How Much Is a Trillion? Understanding Really Big Numbers
A million seconds from now is about 11.6 days away. A billion seconds is about 31.7 years. A trillion seconds? Roughly 31,700 years, far longer than all of recorded human history.
In everyday speech, "million," "billion" and "trillion" sound like three neighboring sizes of "a lot." In reality each one is a thousand times bigger than the one before it. Our brains are poorly built for that kind of gap, and understanding why is the first step to fixing it.
The Difference Between a Billion and a Trillion Is Almost a Trillion
Here's a question that trips people up. What's the difference between one trillion and one billion?
1,000,000,000,000 − 1,000,000,000 = 999,000,000,000
The answer is 999 billion. Next to a trillion, a billion is a rounding error: just 0.1%. Yet in headlines the two words look almost the same, separated by a single letter.
The Ladder of Powers of Ten
Big numbers are easiest to handle in scientific notation, where each step is a power of 10:

- 1 million seconds ≈ 11.6 days

If you started counting one number per second at birth, without sleeping, you'd reach a billion in your early thirties. You would never come close to a trillion.
Money
A U.S. $100 bill is about 0.11 mm thick. One trillion dollars in $100 bills is 10 billion bills. Stacked:

Why "Billion" Doesn't Always Mean the Same Thing
There are two naming systems:
- Short scale (U.S. and modern English usage): billion = 10⁹, trillion = 10¹²
- Long scale (much of continental Europe and Latin America): billion = 10¹², trillion = 10¹⁸
In the long scale, 10⁹ is "a thousand million," sometimes called a milliard. The United Kingdom officially used the long scale until 1974, when the government adopted the short scale for official statistics. Psychologists have measured just how badly we handle scale. In a well-known study published in 1993, William Desvousges and colleagues asked people how much they'd pay to save migrating birds from drowning in oil ponds. The number of birds varied by group:

A 100-fold increase in impact barely changed the answer. Researchers call this scope insensitivity. Past a certain size, our minds stop scaling and just register "a lot."
Cognitive scientist Stanislas Dehaene has shown that humans seem to represent quantities on an internal mental number line that behaves logarithmically. The gap between 1 and 10 feels similar to the gap between 10 and 100. That's useful for estimating, but it makes a billion and a trillion feel much closer than they are.

Orders of Magnitude
An order of magnitude is a factor of 10. A trillion is three orders of magnitude bigger than a billion. Physicists often estimate answers only to the nearest order of magnitude. These are called Fermi estimates, after Enrico Fermi, who famously estimated the yield of the first atomic bomb test by dropping scraps of paper and watching how far the blast wave carried them.
Logarithmic Scales

When you see a huge number in the news, divide it by something familiar. The U.S. population is about 335 million. So:
