The Mayan numeral system represented numbers and calendar dates in the Maya civilization — a vigesimal (base-20) positional system built from just three symbols: a shell for zero, a dot for one, and a bar for five.

Numbers above 19 are written vertically in powers of twenty, the same way the Hindu-Arabic system uses powers of ten. For example, thirty-three is one dot (representing "one twenty", or 1×20) stacked above three dots and a bar (thirteen) — (1×20) + 13 = 33. Upon reaching 20² (400), another row starts.
